Week 36

Mother:

You may feel totally ready to give birth or in other words…be tired of being pregnant. This is absolutely normal. You are in a ‘any moment now’ phase of your pregnancy. Most babies will be comfortably lying head down in your tummy. This will enable you to breathe more easily, but may make you go to the bathroom more often. In about 4% of the pregnancies the baby doesn’t turn downwards but will be in a breech. This is not serious. First of all, there are exercises you can do yourself to stimulate the baby to turn. Should the exercises not work, your doctor may want to try an external cephalic version (ECV); turning the baby by hand.

Baby:

If you were to start having contractions at this point, your doctor will probably not stop it but let you continue to go into labor. Your baby weighs about 2.3 kg and measures 45 cm. Ask your doctor to ‘palpate’ (feel your tummy) in order to estimate the weight of your baby. Even though it is not an exact science some doctors can come very close to the actual weight!
